17 December 2005 - NOBEL SQUARE IS OFFICIALLY UNVEILED V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, 16 December 2005 Today South Africa’s four Nobel Peace Prize Laureates are being honoured for their extraordinary achievement of peace and democracy in our great country, with the official unveiling of a sculptural square in the historical heart of Cape Town. Nobel Square is a Provincial Government of the Western Cape project in partnership with the V&A Waterfront. Located between the V&A Hotel and CD Wherehouse, Nobel Square will from today be home to sculptures of the late Nkosi Albert Luthuli, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, former State President FW de Klerk and former President Nelson Mandela; as well as a fifth sculpture, Peace and Democracy, a narrative work acknowledging the contribution of women and children to the attainment of peace in South Africa. "South Africa is blessed that it has many Nobel Laureates and four outstanding Peace Laureates. Given the fact that the entire world learns from South Africa today, as we stand out as a beacon of Democracy, Peace and Stability, we would be wrong not to honour and celebrate the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates," said Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool. Two of South Africa’s most highly acclaimed sculptors, Claudette Schreuders and Noria Mabasa, were commissioned after an extremely thorough and comprehensive consultative process followed by the two committees appointed to drive the Nobel Square process: the Nobel Square Project Committee, comprising representatives of the four Laureates, Provincial Government of the Western Cape, V&A Waterfront and the province’s tourism and arts sectors, and its advisory body, the Nobel Square Technical Committee, comprising Western Cape art and technical experts. “It is indeed an honour and a privilege to partner the Provincial Government in this most important initiative, said Waterfront’s MD Derick van der Merwe. “Nobel Laureates are South Africa’s greatest ambassadors to what our achievements mean on the international stage. We believe the V&A Waterfront is the perfect venue to expose South Africa’s legacy to both locals and international visitors alike. “Nobel Square aligns the V&A Waterfront with some of the world’s most well-known public spaces that pay tribute to national heroes who have become international icons.” With the V&A Waterfront attracting 22million visits per year, it is envisaged that Nobel Square will become a renowned tourist and artistic attraction for the Western Cape, and that its historical and cultural significance and universal symbolism will make it a ‘must-see’ for both local and international visitors.
