The artists' appointment was the result of a thorough and comprehensive consultative process led by the Nobel Square Project Committee, and consisting of representatives of the four Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, the Western Cape government, the V&A Waterfront and the province's tourism and arts sectors. Its advisory body, the Nobel Square Technical Committee, was made up of Western Cape art and technical experts. The Laureates' representatives have on more than one occasion said that they are particularly impressed with the integrity of the process and progress made thus far. |

Mabasa is the sculptor of Peace and Democracy. She is a 70-year-old artist from Vuwani in the Limpopo Province who has been declared one of South Africa’s living treasures. Recently, a street in Johannesburg was named after her. Mabasa, whose works come to her through dreams, is one of the foremost artists to use Venda myths and legends in her work. Her twisted wooden figures, The Flood (1994) and Union Buildings (1999), are some of her better-known works. She also makes figurative ceramics, some of which were included in the first Johannesburg Biennale in 1994. Download Noria Mabasa's CV |
Claudette Schreuders, based in Cape Town, produced the sculptures of the four Laureates. This 32-year-old artist has a Masters Degree in Fine Art. She enjoys international recognition and regularly sells the works she exhibits at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York. She creates figures that reflect the ambiguities of the search for an 'African' identity in the post-apartheid 21st century. Her figures demonstrate a hybrid canon influenced by the blolo and colon figures of West Africa, as well as other stylistic input from medieval church sculpture, Spanish portraiture and Egyptian woodcarving.
